All Hands on Bucky

Behind the Design:

The children who provided the handprints covering this statue are from the Milwaukee Sign Language School. It is a challenge for these students to visit the state capital and this brought them closer to the city of Madison and UW-Madison through Bucky. They received special permission to travel to Madison for the May 7th unveiling.

About the Artist:

Ann Pahnke

I love that art is personal for both the creator and observer. There is no right or wrong in it. In this instance, it is designed for children to be done by children. I remember Bucky visiting my kids’ school and the children all loved him—he represents joy, optimism and inclusion in education. I would like to thank Becky Selbach and the teachers from the Milwaukee Sign Language School, and Erin Dreske and Sandy Liban from Irving Elementary School, for making this happen.
